The best Instagram schedulers in 2026, compared on Reels, Stories and grid

Almost every scheduler says it supports Instagram. The differences show up in the details: whether a Story is published for you or turns into a phone reminder, whether the first comment goes out with the post, whether you can see the grid before it goes live, and what happens to the DMs your posts start. We compared six options on those points, using each vendor's own pricing and help pages and Meta's developer documentation.

TL;DR: Postify is our pick if Instagram is one of several networks you run: Stories, Reels and carousels publish directly, the grid preview is built in, and the inbox handles Instagram DMs and comment-to-DM automations from the Plus plan. Later is the strongest Instagram-first planner, Metricool the best free start, Meta Business Suite the free native option for Instagram and Facebook only, and Planoly suits grid planners who need product tags.

By the Postify team at Businice S.R.L. Postify makes this site. We list ourselves first and say where other tools are stronger.

What makes a good Instagram scheduler?

A good Instagram scheduler publishes Stories, Reels and carousels directly instead of sending a phone reminder, posts the first comment with the post, shows the feed grid before anything goes live, and handles the DMs your posts start. Best-time suggestions and a fair price for one brand matter next, then extra networks.

Stories are the clearest test. Meta's API lets apps publish Stories, but several tools still switch some of them to notification publishing, where your phone buzzes at the scheduled time and you finish the post by hand. That is fine for a sticker-heavy Story and a chore for a daily one, so check which Stories each tool can publish on its own.

The grid matters because Instagram is the one network where people judge your profile as a whole. A preview that places the scheduled posts next to the ones already live saves a lot of deleting and reposting. The inbox matters because posts start conversations: a comment-to-DM automation that sends a link to everyone who comments a keyword turns a post into a lead source.

Finally, check the connection. Instagram's API only works with professional accounts (Business or Creator), and some tools still require a Facebook Page linked to the account. Tools built on Instagram Login do not.

What does the Instagram API let a scheduler publish?

Through Meta's API, a scheduler can publish single images, videos, Reels, Stories and carousels of up to 20 items to professional accounts. Images must be JPEG, an account can publish 100 API posts in 24 hours, and shopping tags and filters are not supported. These rules apply to every third-party tool on this list.

Meta documents two ways to connect: Instagram API with Instagram Login and Instagram API with Facebook Login. With Instagram Login, a Facebook Page is not required. With Facebook Login, the Instagram account must be linked to a Page. Both support publishing, comment moderation, messaging, insights and mentions.

Some features depend on the login type. Meta lists hashtag search, product tagging and partnership ads as unsupported with Instagram Login. So a tool built on Instagram Login, Postify included, cannot add product tags to a scheduled post, while tools built on Facebook Login, such as Planoly, can.

A few limits apply whatever the tool. A carousel counts as one post toward the 100-post daily cap. The API cannot apply Instagram's filters or shopping tags, and branded content posts can carry at most two sponsor tags. If a vendor promises something outside these rules, it is probably sending you a reminder to finish the post in the app.

  • Accounts: Instagram professional accounts only (Business or Creator).
  • Formats: images (JPEG only), videos, Reels, Stories and carousels of up to 20 images or videos.
  • Volume: 100 API-published posts per account in a rolling 24 hours; a carousel counts as one.
  • Not available through the API: shopping tags and filters.

Can you schedule Instagram posts without a third-party tool?

Yes. The Instagram app schedules Reels, photos and carousels up to 30 days ahead, with up to 25 scheduled posts a day, and Meta Business Suite schedules posts, Stories and Reels for Instagram and Facebook for free. Both cover Meta's networks only, and product tags or collabs cannot be scheduled in the app.

In the Instagram app, you schedule from the final screen of a new post under advanced settings. Instagram's help center says scheduled posts can be edited, rescheduled, deleted or shared right away, and that product tags, collabs, sponsored posts and fundraisers are not compatible with scheduling.

Meta Business Suite is free on desktop and in its mobile app. It adds Stories scheduling, a planner that shows scheduled Instagram and Facebook content, a view of your Instagram grid, A/B tests, and an inbox that brings together Facebook Page, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp Business messages and comments with automated responses.

If you post only to Instagram and Facebook, the native tools may be all you need. A third-party scheduler earns its price when you also publish to TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube or other networks, want a queue that fills itself, or work with a team or clients.

Which Instagram schedulers publish Stories directly?

Postify, Metricool and Buffer publish Instagram Stories directly, Later does so for business profiles on paid plans, and Planoly auto-posts Stories for business accounts only. Buffer and Metricool send Stories with stickers or links as phone notifications instead. Meta Business Suite, Meta's own free tool, schedules Stories natively for Instagram and Facebook.

The table sums up the Instagram features we could verify on each vendor's own pages. "Not documented" means we did not find the feature on the official pages, not that it is missing. Prices are list prices for the cheapest paid plan in US dollars; Postify bills in euros, so compare at your own exchange rate.

How we checked

We scored each tool on six Instagram jobs: direct publishing of Stories, Reels and carousels; first comments; feed grid preview; a DM inbox and comment-to-DM automations; best-time data; and price for one brand. Every competitor fact comes from the vendor's own pricing page or help center, read on the date shown, and the platform rules come from Meta's developer and help pages. Where a vendor did not document a feature, we left it out rather than guess. We make Postify, so check our claims against the same criteria.

Facts checked on October 22, 2026.

1. Postify

Instagram alongside other networks, with direct Stories, grid preview and a DM inbox

Postify connects Instagram professional accounts through Instagram Login, so no Facebook Page is needed, and publishes photos, Reels, carousels and Stories directly with no phone reminder. The feed grid preview shows scheduled posts next to the ones already on your profile, and each network gets its own caption inside one post, so the Instagram version can carry its own hashtags. From the Plus plan, the first comment goes out with the post, the unified inbox handles Instagram DMs and comments, and comment-to-DM automations reply to a keyword with a message. Best-time suggestions for Instagram start on the Starter plan. The same calendar also publishes to Facebook, Threads, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, X, Pinterest and Plative, our own social network, nine platforms in all, and every plan includes Postify Link and our MCP server, so your own AI assistant, such as Claude or ChatGPT, can draft and schedule posts for you.

Pros

  • +Stories, Reels and carousels publish directly, with no reminder step
  • +Instagram Login: a professional account is enough, no Facebook Page required
  • +Feed grid preview for Instagram (and TikTok)
  • +Instagram DMs, comments and comment-to-DM automations in one inbox from the Plus plan
  • +Best-time suggestions for Instagram from the Starter plan
  • +Link in bio page and MCP server access on every plan
  • +A free 7-day trial on every plan

Cons

  • -No free plan, and the entry plan is 1 brand, 1 user and 15 posts a month with no inbox or first comment
  • -No product tags on Instagram posts, because Instagram Login does not support product tagging
  • -No built-in AI writer, no CSV upload, and no public REST API, Zapier or Make (the MCP server is the programmatic route)
  • -No social listening, and competitor benchmarks cover YouTube channels only, not Instagram

Verdict: Pick Postify when Instagram is your main network but not your only one, and you want Stories to go out on their own, a grid preview and Instagram DMs in the same place. If you sell through Instagram Shopping and need product tags, or you want a free plan, look at Planoly or Metricool instead.

Pricing: From €9.99 per month (€8.33 billed yearly) for 1 brand, 1 user and 15 posts per month; first comment, inbox and automations from the Plus plan

2. Later

Instagram-first visual planning, with first comments and best-time data

Later is built around visual Instagram planning. The Visual Instagram Planner is on every plan, and paid plans add Instagram first comments (for auto-published posts from business and creator profiles), carousels of up to 10 items, Stories that auto-publish for business profiles, and best-time-to-post data for Instagram and TikTok. Collaborative posts can invite up to three collaborators. The Social Inbox, with Instagram and Facebook DMs and comments, starts on the Growth plan ($37.50 per month billed yearly), and social listening and competitor benchmarking for Instagram are on Scale. Later's help center notes that trending music, stickers and polls cannot be added through the integration.

Pros

  • +Visual Instagram Planner on every plan
  • +First comment and best-time data on paid plans
  • +Collaborative posts with up to 3 collaborators
  • +Instagram listening and competitor benchmarking on the Scale plan

Cons

  • -Social Inbox only from the Growth plan
  • -Carousels and Stories need a paid plan, and Stories auto-publish for business profiles only
  • -Starter caps posting at 30 posts per profile per month

Verdict: Pick Later if Instagram, and visual planning in particular, is the core of your work and you want first comments, best-time data and benchmarking from one Instagram specialist.

Pricing: Starter $18.75 per month billed yearly (1 social set of up to 8 profiles, 1 user, 30 posts per profile per month); 14-day trial; a limited Free plan

3. Metricool

A free start, trial reels and collaborator tags, and several small brands on one plan

Metricool auto-publishes Instagram posts, Reels, trial reels and Stories, and its help center is clear about the exception: Stories with links, mentions or stickers are sent as a notification for you to finish in the app. It can add a first comment to posts and Reels, tag up to five collaborators, and show a feed preview before you publish. The free plan covers one brand and 20 posts a month, and the paid plans are priced per group of brands rather than per account, which suits freelancers with several small clients. Metricool also offers an MCP server on every plan.

Pros

  • +Free plan for 1 brand and 20 posts per month
  • +Trial reels and up to 5 collaborators
  • +First comment on posts and Reels, plus a feed preview
  • +MCP server on every plan, Free included

Cons

  • -Stories with links, mentions or stickers fall back to a notification
  • -Starter is priced for up to 5 brands, more than a single creator needs

Verdict: Pick Metricool if you want to start free, need trial reels or collaborator tags, or manage several small brands on one plan.

Pricing: Free for 1 brand and 20 posts per month; Starter $25 per month billed monthly or $20 billed yearly, for up to 5 brands

4. Meta Business Suite

Free native scheduling for Instagram and Facebook only

Meta Business Suite is Meta's own free tool for managing Facebook and Instagram. It schedules posts, Stories and Reels for both networks, shows scheduled content in a planner, gives you a view of your Instagram grid, runs A/B tests on posts, and combines Facebook Page, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp Business messages and comments in one inbox with automated responses. The catch is scope: it does nothing for TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, X or Pinterest.

Pros

  • +Free on desktop and in the mobile app
  • +Posts, Stories and Reels scheduled natively
  • +Inbox covering Instagram, Messenger, Facebook and WhatsApp Business

Cons

  • -Instagram and Facebook only
  • -No TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, X or Pinterest, so other networks need a second tool

Verdict: Pick Meta Business Suite if you only post to Instagram and Facebook and do not want to pay. Add a scheduler once other networks, a shared queue or client approvals come into play.

Pricing: Free on desktop and in the Meta Business Suite mobile app

5. Planoly

Grid planning and Instagram shopping posts with product tags

Planoly is built around planning the Instagram grid. Its auto-post guide lists single images, single videos, Reels and carousels for business and creator accounts, plus first comments, user tags, location tags and product tags. Stories auto-post for business accounts only, without their captions, and carousels cannot carry a location. The Starter plan includes a link-in-bio page and Instagram DM automations, and the mobile app has a free plan with 10 uploads a month.

Pros

  • +Grid planner at the center of the app
  • +Product tags, user tags and location tags on auto-posted content
  • +Instagram DM automations from the Starter plan

Cons

  • -Stories auto-post for business accounts only, and without captions
  • -No location on carousels

Verdict: Pick Planoly if you plan Instagram visually and sell through Instagram Shopping, since product tags are one thing Instagram Login tools cannot add.

Pricing: Starter $16 per month billed monthly or $14 billed yearly (1 social set, 1 user, unlimited uploads); 14-day trial on paid plans; a free mobile plan with 10 uploads per month

6. Buffer

One or two Instagram accounts on a small budget

Buffer publishes Instagram images, videos, carousels of up to 10 images, Stories and Reels, and adds first comments on its paid Essentials and Team plans. Stories auto-publish, but Buffer switches a Reel or Story to notification publishing when it uses music, stickers, links or collaborators, or when the account is a personal one. Auto-publishing needs a professional account connected to a Facebook Page. Pricing is per channel, so a single Instagram account is cheap and the bill grows with each account you add.

Pros

  • +Free plan for 3 channels
  • +Low per-channel price for one or two accounts
  • +First comment on Essentials and Team

Cons

  • -Reels and Stories with music, stickers, links or collaborators become notifications
  • -Needs a Facebook Page linked to the Instagram account for auto-publishing

Verdict: Pick Buffer if you run one or two Instagram accounts, want to start free, and mostly post feed content that the API publishes cleanly.

Pricing: Free for 3 channels and 10 scheduled posts per channel; Essentials $6 per channel per month ($5 billed yearly); 14-day trial

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Instagram scheduler?
It depends on what else you do. For Instagram plus other networks, with Stories published directly, a grid preview and Instagram DMs in one inbox, we recommend Postify. Later is the strongest Instagram-first planner, Metricool the best free start, Planoly the pick for product tags, and Meta Business Suite is free if you only use Instagram and Facebook. We make Postify, so weigh it against the criteria above.
Can you schedule Instagram Stories to post automatically?
Yes. Meta's API supports Stories, so tools such as Postify, Metricool, Later (business profiles) and Buffer can publish them without a reminder, and Meta Business Suite schedules them natively. Stories with music, stickers or links are the exception in several tools: Buffer and Metricool send those as phone notifications, because the API cannot add those elements.
Is there a free Instagram scheduler?
Yes. The Instagram app schedules Reels, photos and carousels, Meta Business Suite adds Stories, and Later, Metricool, Buffer and Planoly have free plans with post or upload caps. Postify has no free plan, but every plan starts with a free 7-day trial.
Do I need a Facebook Page to schedule Instagram posts?
Not always. Meta's Instagram API with Instagram Login works with a professional account alone, and Postify connects that way. Tools built on Facebook Login need the Instagram account linked to a Facebook Page; Buffer, for example, requires that for auto-publishing. Personal Instagram accounts cannot be published to through the API at all.
How far in advance can you schedule Instagram posts?
In the Instagram app, up to 30 days ahead, with a limit of 25 scheduled posts a day. Third-party schedulers hold the post themselves and publish it through the API at the time you set, within Meta's limit of 100 API-published posts per account in 24 hours.
Can a scheduler add product tags or collaborators to Instagram posts?
Product tags need a tool built on Facebook Login: Meta lists product tagging as unsupported for apps on Instagram Login, which includes Postify. Planoly auto-posts with product tags. For collaborators, Metricool tags up to five and Later up to three. The Instagram app itself cannot schedule posts with product tags or collabs.
Can ChatGPT or Claude schedule Instagram posts?
Yes, through a scheduler's MCP server. Postify's MCP server, included on every plan, lets your own assistant such as Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor draft, schedule and check Instagram posts in your Postify account. Metricool also offers an MCP server on every plan.
