You write a caption with paragraphs, you check it looks right, you publish, and it comes out as one solid block. This is the single most reported piece of weirdness in the Instagram composer, and it is not a bug you can work around by pressing return harder.
Instagram does two things to your text on the way in. It removes trailing spaces and tabs from the end of every line, and then it discards any line that is now empty. A line you left blank for spacing is empty by definition, so it disappears and the paragraphs on either side of it join up.
The fix is to make the blank line not blank. This tool trims the trailing whitespace itself, then drops a single invisible character onto every empty line, so Instagram sees a line with content on it and keeps it. Your spacing survives. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored.

Why Instagram eats your line breaks
Nothing about this is random, which is why a fix exists at all. Instagram normalizes a caption in two steps, and a blank line does not survive either of them.
1. Trailing whitespace comes off
Spaces and tabs at the end of a line are stripped. This is the step that catches people who tried to fix the problem by putting a space on the empty line: the space is exactly what gets removed, so the line is empty again by the time step two runs.
2. Empty lines are discarded
Any line with nothing left on it is dropped, and the paragraphs above and below it join up. Adding more blank lines does not help, because every one of them is removed by the same rule.
3. So the line has to stop being empty
This tool puts one Braille Pattern Blank, U+2800, on each of those lines. It is a real printing character with a genuine width, so Instagram keeps the line, and it has no visible glyph, so the line still reads as a gap. Crucially it is not whitespace, so step one leaves it alone.
The separator is not free. Each one costs a character plus the newline after it, out of the 2,200 an Instagram caption allows. For a caption with five gaps that is ten characters, which is a rounding error, but the counter above shows both totals so you never have to guess.

Captions
The main case. Feed posts, carousels and Reels all share the same caption field, and all three collapse blank lines the same way. Paste the spaced version and the paragraphs hold.
Profile bio
The bio needs it more than captions do, because it collapses line breaks just as readily and there is far less room to recover. Remember the bio is only 150 characters, and each separator spends two of them.
Comments
Comments behave like captions, which matters when you move a hashtag block or a long explanation into the first comment. A spaced comment stays readable instead of turning into one paragraph.
Scheduling instead of pasting

Caption spacing tips
- Draft the caption somewhere with a real text field, paste it here, and copy the result. Typing directly into the Instagram app is where spacing usually gets lost.
- Paste into Instagram rather than retyping. Retyping loses the invisible characters and puts you back where you started.
- Each separator costs two characters, itself plus the newline. Five gaps is ten characters out of your 2,200, which is nothing, but it is not free either.
- Put the hook above the fold. Instagram collapses the caption after roughly 125 characters, and spacing below that line is only seen by people who tapped "... more".
- Two or three short paragraphs beat one long one and beat five one-line fragments. Spacing is a reading aid, not a design element.
- Keep hashtags in their own block at the end, separated by a spacer line. They are easier to edit later and they stop interrupting the sentences.

Why do my Instagram line breaks disappear?

No. The spacing happens in your browser with JavaScript, nothing is sent to a server, and nothing is saved. There is no account step and no email gate. Close the tab and the text is gone.
