The best social media analytics tools in 2026, and when the free dashboards are enough
Every network already gives you free analytics. A paid tool earns its price only if it adds what the native dashboards do not: every account in one place, longer history, competitor benchmarks and reports you can send to someone else. We compared five tools on exactly those additions.
Up to 14 days free. Card required, but you won't be charged before the trial ends. Cancel anytime.

TL;DR: Start with the free native dashboards: Instagram shows up to 90 days and YouTube Studio exports reports. Sprout Social and Hootsuite are the deepest paid tools, Metricool has the best free plan and adds ads analytics, and Agorapulse ties reports to ROI. Postify (ours) includes analytics on every plan from €9.99 per month, but its depth varies a lot by network.
By the Postify team at Businice S.R.L. Postify makes this site. It is on this list but not ranked first, and we say where other tools are stronger.
The best social media analytics tools at a glance
The best social media analytics tools in 2026 are Sprout Social for deep reporting, Hootsuite for analytics with listening, Metricool for a free start with ads data, Agorapulse for ROI reports and Postify (we make it) for analytics bundled with publishing. Before paying for any of them, check whether the free native dashboards already answer your questions.
The table compares the five on what a paid tool adds over the native dashboards. Full entries, with where each tool is weaker, follow below the sections.
| Tool | Best for | Free plan | Paid from | Competitor benchmarks | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sprout Social | Teams that report to stakeholders | No | $79 per seat per month billed annually | Extensive competitor insights on Professional | 2026-10-22 |
| Hootsuite | Analytics plus listening in one suite | No | $99 per user per month billed annually | 5 competitors on Standard, 20 on Professional | 2026-10-22 |
| Metricool | A free start, several brands and ads data | Yes, 1 brand and 30 days of analytics | $20 per month billed yearly | 5 on Free, up to 100 from Starter | 2026-10-22 |
| Agorapulse | ROI and branded client reports | No | $79 per user per month billed annually | Advanced plan | 2026-10-22 |
| Postify (we make it) | Analytics bundled with publishing | No | €9.99 per month | YouTube channels, from Starter | 2026-10-22 |
Are the free native analytics enough?
For one account on one network, often yes. Instagram's insights cover business and creator accounts for any period in the past 90 days, and YouTube Studio has reach, engagement, audience and revenue tabs with an Advanced Mode to compare and export. A paid tool is worth it when you manage several accounts, need longer history or report to others.
Native analytics are also the most complete source for their own network, because third-party tools can only read what each network's API returns. If a metric is missing from a paid tool, it is often missing from the API, not hidden by the vendor.
Their limits show up when the work grows. Each dashboard covers one network, history is capped (Instagram at 90 days), and there is no shared report for a client or manager. Instagram also only shows audience demographics once an account has reached or engaged more than 100 accounts. Those gaps are what the paid tools below are built to fill.
| Dashboard | What it covers | History | Export | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instagram insights | Business and creator accounts, in the mobile app | Any period in the past 90 days | Not described in the help page | 2026-10-22 |
| YouTube Studio analytics | Overview, Content, Reach, Engagement, Audience, Revenue and Trends tabs | Date ranges you choose | Advanced Mode | 2026-10-22 |
What should a social media analytics tool do?
A social media analytics tool should put every account in one view, keep more history than the networks do, compare you with competitors and turn the numbers into reports you can send. Check what each plan includes, because history length, competitor counts, exports and white-label reports are usually split across tiers.
Depth per network matters as much as the feature list. Every tool reads the networks' official APIs, and those APIs expose different metrics: Instagram returns reach, saves and shares, while other networks return far less. Ask which metrics a tool shows for the networks you care about before you buy.
- One view across accounts and networks, with follower growth over time.
- History: how far back you can look on your plan, and whether data is kept when you downgrade.
- Competitor benchmarks: which networks, and how many competitor accounts per plan.
- Reports: PDF or slide exports, scheduled emails, CSV data and your own logo for clients.
- Extras some teams need: ads analytics, social listening and best times to post.
How do you calculate engagement rate?
The most common formula adds a post's likes and comments, divides them by the account's followers and multiplies by 100. Some tools also count saves and shares, or divide by reach instead, which gives a different number, so compare rates only when they use the same formula. Our free engagement rate calculators use likes and comments over followers.
Engagement rate by followers uses numbers anyone can check, which is why published benchmarks and competitor comparisons use it. Engagement rate by reach is the sharper measure for a single post, but only you can see your own reach, saves and shares. Use one formula consistently, and note which one a report uses before you compare it with another tool's figures.
What is the difference between social media analytics and social listening?
Social media analytics measure your own accounts: reach, engagement, followers and post results. Social listening tracks conversations about your brand, competitors or topics across social networks and the web, including posts that never tag you. Hootsuite and Sprout Social offer some listening, while Brandwatch and Talkwalker are dedicated enterprise listening platforms sold through demos.
Listening is a different purchase. Brandwatch and Talkwalker are built for brands and agencies that track mentions, sentiment and trends at scale, and neither publishes a price; both ask you to request a demo. We did not rank them here, because they answer a different question from the analytics tools above.
If you need some listening without a separate contract, Hootsuite includes listening on Standard and 30-day Quick Search on Professional, Sprout Social sells Listening as an add-on from Standard, and Agorapulse lists a listening product. Postify does not do social listening.
