What is a unified social media inbox?
A unified social media inbox is one screen where comments, direct messages and mentions from several social networks arrive together, so you can read and reply without opening each app. Better inboxes add filters, read status, assignment to teammates, saved replies and automation rules that hide spam or answer common questions.
Coverage is never complete, because each network decides what its API allows. Direct messages are the hardest part: tools reach Facebook and Instagram DMs through Meta's API, while DMs on other networks are often missing. Meta also only lets a business send a normal reply within 24 hours of the customer's last message, a rule every tool has to follow.
- Networks and message types: comments, DMs, mentions, ad comments and reviews, per network.
- Automation: moderation rules, auto-replies and comment-to-DM flows, with limits that keep accounts safe.
- Teamwork: assignment, saved replies, labels, collision detection and roles.
- Speed: how quickly new comments and messages arrive, and whether your phone gets a notification.
How do you manage Instagram DMs and comments in one place?
Connect an Instagram professional account to a tool with a unified inbox. Agorapulse, Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Vista Social, Postify, Metricool and Sendible all bring Instagram comments and DMs together. Later's inbox handles both from its Growth plan, with DMs on desktop only. Check whether the tool can also reply privately to a comment and automate keyword replies.
A private reply sends a DM to someone who commented on your post, which is the basis of comment-to-DM campaigns ("comment GUIDE and we will send you the link"). Several tools automate it: Metricool's Flows turn Instagram comments into DMs on paid plans, and Postify runs comment-to-DM automations for Facebook and Instagram from the Plus plan. Vista Social's DM automations answer comments and DMs on every plan, and Hootsuite automates DM workflows on Professional.
Automations need limits to stay safe. Instagram allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days of the comment, and a tool that sends too many messages too fast risks your account. Look for per-person cooldowns, rate caps and a pause when a person on your team replies manually.
Do social media schedulers include an inbox?
Many do, but usually not on the entry plan. Later starts its inbox on Growth, Postify on Plus and Sprout Social on Standard, while Hootsuite, Agorapulse, Vista Social, Sendible and Metricool include one on every plan. Coverage also varies, so check that the networks you get the most comments on are in the inbox, not only in publishing.
TikTok is the most common gap. Later and Metricool list TikTok comments in their inboxes and Agorapulse moderates TikTok ad comments, while Postify has no TikTok or Pinterest inbox.
X is often an add-on or a separate allowance: Agorapulse and Metricool charge extra to connect X, and Vista Social lists X at $29 per month.
