TikTok Ads Character Counter
TikTok in-feed ad text runs from 1 to 100 characters, the display name takes 40, and a Spark ad inherits the 2,200 character caption of the organic post it promotes.
Last updated: 2026-08-06
TikTok has the shortest body copy field in paid social. An in-feed ad gets 100 characters of ad text and that is the whole of it: no headline, no description, no second line. The minimum is real too, at one character, because a blank ad text is rejected rather than defaulted to something.
A hundred characters is roughly one sentence, which matches how the copy is actually consumed. The caption sits over the video, is cut after roughly the first line in feed, and expands on tap. TikTok does not publish a character figure for that cut, so this tool records no visible cap for ad text rather than inventing one, and counts against the 100 character hard cap instead.
Non-Spark ads also carry a display name of up to 40 characters, which is the advertiser name set on the ad rather than taken from the account. Spark ads work differently: they promote an existing organic post, so the copy is the organic caption at up to 2,200 characters and it cannot be edited from the ad. If the caption is wrong, fix it on the original post before boosting, not after.
One more constraint that is not a length: emoji and several special characters are blocked in ad text on a number of TikTok placements. Plain text always passes review, which is why this counter measures what you typed rather than assuming decorative characters will survive. For organic TikTok captions, which run to 4,000 characters, use the social media character counter instead.
TikTok Ads copy fields
TikTok Ads has 3 copy fields across 2 placements. Limits verified 2026-08-06.
Green means it fits, amber means the placement will truncate it or you are inside the last 10% of the usable length, red means the platform rejects it. Where a field has a visible cap, that is the one counted against, because copy hidden behind "See more" has already failed even though the ad runs.
In-feed ad
2 copy fields on this placement.
Hard cap 100 characters, no truncation, the platform rejects anything longer.
0 of 100 characters
- Minimum 1 character: an empty ad text is rejected, not defaulted.
- The caption is cut after roughly the first line in feed and expands on tap. TikTok publishes no character figure for that cut, so none is guessed at here.
- Emoji and some special characters are blocked in ad text on several placements. Plain text always passes.
Hard cap 40 characters, no truncation, the platform rejects anything longer.
0 of 40 characters
- Applies to non-Spark ads, where the advertiser name is set on the ad rather than taken from the account.
Spark ad
1 copy field on this placement.
Hard cap 2,200 characters, no truncation, the platform rejects anything longer.
0 of 2200 characters
- A Spark ad runs an existing organic post, so the caption limit is the organic one and it cannot be edited from the ad.
- Fix the caption on the original post before boosting it, not after.
TikTok Ads character limits, field by field
Every copy field TikTok Ads accepts, grouped by placement. The hard cap is where the ad is rejected or the field stops taking input. The visible cap is where the placement truncates: the ad still runs, it just stops being read past that point.
TikTok Ads: In-feed ad
| Field | Hard cap | Visible | How many |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ad text | 100 chars | No truncation published | One |
| Display name | 40 chars | No truncation published | One |
- Ad text: Minimum 1 character: an empty ad text is rejected, not defaulted.
- Ad text: The caption is cut after roughly the first line in feed and expands on tap. TikTok publishes no character figure for that cut, so none is guessed at here.
- Ad text: Emoji and some special characters are blocked in ad text on several placements. Plain text always passes.
- Display name: Applies to non-Spark ads, where the advertiser name is set on the ad rather than taken from the account.
TikTok Ads: Spark ad
| Field | Hard cap | Visible | How many |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organic caption | 2,200 chars | No truncation published | One |
- Organic caption: A Spark ad runs an existing organic post, so the caption limit is the organic one and it cannot be edited from the ad.
- Organic caption: Fix the caption on the original post before boosting it, not after.
Limits verified 2026-08-06. Character limits were checked against each network published ad specifications on 2026-08-06. Hard limits are the point at which an ad is rejected, visible limits are where a placement truncates and are approximate: they move with device width, font size and language. Platforms change these without notice, so check the ad builder before a large launch.
How TikTok Ads compares to the other ad platforms
Where TikTok Ads sits against the other four networks on the three fields every ad builder asks for. The number after the comma is where that placement truncates: past it the ad still serves, it just stops being read.

Visible caps and hard caps are two different limits
A hard cap is where the platform refuses the ad: the field stops accepting input, or the upload is rejected on review. You find out immediately, which makes it the harmless one. A visible cap is where the placement truncates. The ad is approved, it serves, you pay for the impressions, and the copy past that point sits behind a "See more" control that most of the feed never taps. Nothing tells you it happened.
That is why the counter above measures against the visible cap wherever a field has one. Copy that is hidden has already failed even though the ad is running, so treating the hard cap as the target is how a 3,000 character ad ends up delivering 150 characters of value. Fields turn amber inside the last 10% of the usable length, amber again once they cross the visible cap, and red only when the platform would reject them outright.
Meta (Facebook and Instagram): primary text shows about 125 of 3,000 characters
On the facebook and instagram feed placement, an ad written to the hard cap has roughly 96% of its copy hidden behind a "more" control. The ad is accepted, delivered and charged for in full either way.
LinkedIn Ads: introductory text shows about 150 of 3,000 characters
On the single image ad placement, an ad written to the hard cap has roughly 95% of its copy hidden behind a "more" control. The ad is accepted, delivered and charged for in full either way.
Pinterest Ads: description shows about 50 of 500 characters
On the promoted pin placement, an ad written to the hard cap has roughly 90% of its copy hidden behind a "more" control. The ad is accepted, delivered and charged for in full either way.
Google Ads and TikTok Ads sit outside this problem entirely: none of their copy fields publish a truncation point, so the hard cap is the only cap. A 30 character Google Ads headline is 30 characters, and the 31st is refused in the builder rather than trimmed in the auction.
Visible counts are approximate on every network. They move with device width, font size, language and whether a link preview is attached, so they are recorded here as the conservative figure each platform publishes as its recommendation rather than as a pixel measurement.
TikTok Ads copy tips
- Write to 100 characters as one complete sentence. There is no second field to continue into and no headline to carry the offer, so the ad text has to say the whole thing.
- Put the payoff in the first few words. The caption is cut after roughly the first line in feed and only expands on tap, and TikTok publishes no figure for where that cut lands, so the safe assumption is early.
- Use plain text. Emoji and some special characters are blocked in ad text on several placements, and an ad rejected on review costs more time than the emoji was ever going to earn.
- Set the display name deliberately on non-Spark ads. Forty characters is generous, but it is the name people read next to the video and it is not automatically your account name.
- Fix the caption before you Spark it. A Spark ad runs the organic post as it stands, caption included, and the 2,200 character organic limit applies rather than the 100 character ad text field.
- Do not paste a Meta primary text block in here. A 125 character Meta opener is already 25 characters over what TikTok will accept, which is exactly the kind of silent failure a cross-platform launch produces.
Frequently asked questions
What is the TikTok ad text character limit?
One hundred characters for an in-feed ad, with a minimum of one. TikTok rejects an empty ad text rather than substituting anything, so the field is genuinely required, and 100 is a hard cap rather than a truncation point.
Does TikTok truncate ad captions?
The in-feed caption is cut after roughly the first line on most devices and expands when someone taps it. TikTok does not publish a character figure for that cut, so this tool records no visible cap and counts against the 100 character hard limit instead of guessing a number.
Can I use emoji in TikTok ad text?
Not reliably. Emoji and several special characters are blocked in ad text on a number of placements, and the failure shows up at review rather than while you type. Plain text always passes, which makes it the safe default for anything you need live on a schedule.
What is the character limit for a TikTok Spark ad?
A Spark ad promotes an existing organic post, so the caption limit is the organic one at up to 2,200 characters and it cannot be edited from the ad. The 100 character ad text field does not apply, because there is no separate ad text to write.
What is the TikTok ad display name limit?
Forty characters. It applies to non-Spark ads, where the advertiser name is set on the ad rather than inherited from the account, and it is the name shown next to the video while it plays.
Is TikTok ad text the same as a TikTok caption?
No, and the gap is large. An organic TikTok video description runs to 4,000 characters, while in-feed ad text stops at 100. If you are writing an organic post rather than a paid one, use the social media character counter, which measures the 4,000 character field and the hashtags inside it.
