TikTok Caption Checker and Character Counter
TikTok raised video descriptions from 2,200 to 4,000 characters, and every hashtag, mention and emoji spends part of that same budget.
Last updated: 2026-07-31
TikTok video descriptions run to 4,000 characters, up from the 2,200 the app allowed for years. The extra room is genuinely useful, because TikTok reads the caption for context and its in-app search leans heavily on the words you put there.
Everything shares that budget: hashtags, @ mentions, emoji and spaces are all charged against the same 4,000. A caption padded with twenty hashtags spends a real slice of it on text nobody reads and no algorithm rewards.
Photo posts are a separate format. They carry a title of up to 90 characters on top of the description, so a caption that fits a video will not always drop cleanly into a slideshow.

How TikTok compares to the other networks
The hard ceiling is rarely the number that matters. Here is where TikTok sits against every other network Postify publishes to, including the point each one folds your caption behind a "more" control.

TikTok caption tips
- Say what the video actually is, in plain words. TikTok search reads the caption, and a caption of pure vibes leaves it guessing.
- Keep hashtags to a handful of specific ones. They cost the same characters as your sentences, and a wall of them does not widen reach.
- Only about the first line shows over the video before the "more" toggle, so put the hook there and let the context sit behind it.
- Photo posts need a title of 90 characters or fewer on top of the description. Draft that separately rather than trimming the caption to fit.
- Do not paste an Instagram caption straight across. Line breaks and tag blocks that look tidy in a feed look cramped over a full screen video.
Frequently asked questions
How many characters can a TikTok caption have?
Four thousand characters in the video description field. TikTok raised it from 2,200, so older guides and older third party tools still quote the smaller number.
Do hashtags count toward the TikTok caption limit?
Yes. Hashtags, @ mentions, emoji and spaces all come out of the same 4,000 characters. TikTok does not enforce a separate hashtag cap, which means a tag block can quietly consume a large part of your caption.
How many hashtags should I use on TikTok?
Three to five specific ones beat twenty broad ones. Tags help TikTok categorise the video, they do not multiply distribution, and a caption that is mostly hashtags reads as low effort to viewers.
What is the character limit for TikTok photo posts?
Photo posts add a title field capped at 90 characters, alongside the same description field. The title is what appears most prominently, so it needs to work on its own.
Where does TikTok cut off the caption?
Roughly one line, around 100 characters, before a "more" toggle. The exact point depends on device width and orientation, so aim to have the hook well inside the first sentence.
