LinkedIn Ads Character Counter

A LinkedIn single image ad accepts 3,000 characters of introductory text but shows about 150, and accepts a 200 character headline but shows about 70. Text ads are far tighter at 25 and 75.

Last updated: 2026-08-06

LinkedIn has the widest gap between what an ad accepts and what an ad displays of any network in this set. Introductory text on a single image ad has a hard cap of 3,000 characters and a visible cap of roughly 150 on the desktop feed. Write to the ceiling and 95% of your copy sits behind a "see more" link that most of the feed never clicks.

The headline behaves the same way at a smaller scale: 200 characters accepted, around 70 shown before it is cut on desktop. Neither of these is a rejection, which is what makes them dangerous. The campaign launches, the ad serves, the impressions arrive, and the argument you spent an afternoon on is invisible unless someone expands it.

Text ads are a completely different format with completely different numbers. The headline is 25 characters and the description is 75, both hard caps with no truncation because the sidebar slot holds exactly that much and no more. A 25 character headline is about four words, which is why text ads live or die on the offer rather than on the writing.

This counter treats the visible cap as the binding one wherever a field has both, so a 400 character intro reads as "will be truncated" rather than as a pass. For organic LinkedIn posts, which are one 3,000 character field that folds at about 210 on desktop, use the social media character counter instead.

LinkedIn Ads copy fields

LinkedIn Ads has 4 copy fields across 2 placements. Limits verified 2026-08-06.

Green means it fits, amber means the placement will truncate it or you are inside the last 10% of the usable length, red means the platform rejects it. Where a field has a visible cap, that is the one counted against, because copy hidden behind "See more" has already failed even though the ad runs.

Writing a post rather than an ad? Organic captions are one long field with their own hashtag and mention caps, and none of the numbers above apply to them. The character counter for organic captions covers all eight networks Postify publishes to.

LinkedIn Ads character limits, field by field

Every copy field LinkedIn Ads accepts, grouped by placement. The hard cap is where the ad is rejected or the field stops taking input. The visible cap is where the placement truncates: the ad still runs, it just stops being read past that point.

Limits verified 2026-08-06. Character limits were checked against each network published ad specifications on 2026-08-06. Hard limits are the point at which an ad is rejected, visible limits are where a placement truncates and are approximate: they move with device width, font size and language. Platforms change these without notice, so check the ad builder before a large launch.

How LinkedIn Ads compares to the other ad platforms

Where LinkedIn Ads sits against the other four networks on the three fields every ad builder asks for. The number after the comma is where that placement truncates: past it the ad still serves, it just stops being read.

Visible caps and hard caps are two different limits

A hard cap is where the platform refuses the ad: the field stops accepting input, or the upload is rejected on review. You find out immediately, which makes it the harmless one. A visible cap is where the placement truncates. The ad is approved, it serves, you pay for the impressions, and the copy past that point sits behind a "See more" control that most of the feed never taps. Nothing tells you it happened.

That is why the counter above measures against the visible cap wherever a field has one. Copy that is hidden has already failed even though the ad is running, so treating the hard cap as the target is how a 3,000 character ad ends up delivering 150 characters of value. Fields turn amber inside the last 10% of the usable length, amber again once they cross the visible cap, and red only when the platform would reject them outright.

  • Meta (Facebook and Instagram): primary text shows about 125 of 3,000 characters

On the facebook and instagram feed placement, an ad written to the hard cap has roughly 96% of its copy hidden behind a "more" control. The ad is accepted, delivered and charged for in full either way.

  • LinkedIn Ads: introductory text shows about 150 of 3,000 characters

On the single image ad placement, an ad written to the hard cap has roughly 95% of its copy hidden behind a "more" control. The ad is accepted, delivered and charged for in full either way.

  • Pinterest Ads: description shows about 50 of 500 characters

On the promoted pin placement, an ad written to the hard cap has roughly 90% of its copy hidden behind a "more" control. The ad is accepted, delivered and charged for in full either way.

Google Ads and TikTok Ads sit outside this problem entirely: none of their copy fields publish a truncation point, so the hard cap is the only cap. A 30 character Google Ads headline is 30 characters, and the 31st is refused in the builder rather than trimmed in the auction.

Visible counts are approximate on every network. They move with device width, font size, language and whether a link preview is attached, so they are recorded here as the conservative figure each platform publishes as its recommendation rather than as a pixel measurement.

LinkedIn Ads copy tips

  • Write the first 150 characters as if they were the whole ad. That is what the desktop feed shows before "see more", and it is the only part you can count on being read.
  • Do not treat 3,000 characters as an invitation. The extra room is real and occasionally useful for context or compliance language, but every character past 150 is opt-in reading rather than delivered copy.
  • Keep the headline inside 70 characters even though LinkedIn accepts 200. The 130 characters past the cut are served, paid for, and never seen on desktop.
  • Ask a question or state a number in the first line. LinkedIn ads that earn the expand tend to open with something specific enough to be worth resolving, and generic openers waste the only 150 characters you control.
  • Budget separately for text ads. A 25 character headline and a 75 character description cannot be trimmed down from single image ad copy, they have to be written for the slot.
  • Remember that mobile shows less than desktop. The 150 and 70 figures are the desktop cuts, so on a mobile-heavy campaign the safe opener is shorter still.

Frequently asked questions

What is the LinkedIn ad character limit?

A single image ad takes up to 3,000 characters of introductory text and a 200 character headline. Both truncate long before those points: about 150 characters of intro text and about 70 of the headline are visible on the desktop feed before the rest is collapsed.

Where does LinkedIn truncate ad intro text?

At roughly 150 characters on desktop, behind a "see more" link. LinkedIn truncates rather than rejects, so the ad runs exactly as submitted and only the display is cut. The gap between 150 visible and 3,000 accepted is the widest of any platform in this comparison.

How many characters is a LinkedIn ad headline?

Two hundred characters on a single image ad, of which around 70 show before the headline is cut on desktop. Text ads are a separate format with a much tighter 25 character headline that is a hard cap with no truncation at all.

What are the LinkedIn text ad limits?

Twenty-five characters for the headline and 75 for the description. Both are hard caps: the sidebar slot holds that much and the builder will not accept more, so there is no visible-versus-accepted trade-off to manage.

Are sponsored content limits the same as organic post limits?

The hard cap is the same 3,000 characters, but the fold is not. An organic LinkedIn post collapses at about 210 characters on desktop, while a sponsored single image ad collapses at about 150, because the ad frame gives up room to the headline and the call to action. Use the social media character counter for organic posts.

Does LinkedIn count hashtags against the ad limit?

Yes, hashtags are just text and spend the same characters as words. In paid placements they earn far less than they do organically, so on an ad with only 150 visible characters a hashtag block is usually the first thing worth cutting.
