Pinterest Ads Character Counter
A Promoted Pin takes a 100 character title and a 500 character description, but the grid shows roughly the first 40 characters of the title and about 50 of the description once a Pin is opened.
Last updated: 2026-08-06
Pinterest ads have two copy fields and both of them are read twice: once by a person scrolling a grid, and once by the search index that decides which grids the Pin appears in. The title has a hard cap of 100 characters and the description a hard cap of 500, and neither number is what a viewer sees.
In the grid, roughly the first 40 characters of the title show before it is cut. The description is not displayed in the feed at all on most surfaces, and once someone opens the Pin only about the first 50 to 60 characters are shown before the rest is collapsed. So the visible budget for a Promoted Pin is around 40 characters of title and around 50 of description, against hard caps of 100 and 500.
That is a case for writing the full 500 anyway, which is unusual advice on a page about character limits. The whole description feeds Pinterest search even though almost nobody reads past the first line, so the characters past the fold are working as metadata rather than as copy. Front-load the payoff for the human, then keep writing for the index.
Idea ads use the same numbers: a 100 character title cut at about 40, and a 500 character description shown on the detail view rather than the grid at about 50. This counter treats the visible cap as the binding one, so a 90 character title reads as "will be truncated" rather than as a pass. For organic Pins, use the social media character counter instead.
Pinterest Ads copy fields
Pinterest Ads has 4 copy fields across 2 placements. Limits verified 2026-08-06.
Green means it fits, amber means the placement will truncate it or you are inside the last 10% of the usable length, red means the platform rejects it. Where a field has a visible cap, that is the one counted against, because copy hidden behind "See more" has already failed even though the ad runs.
Promoted Pin
2 copy fields on this placement.
Hard cap 100 characters, about 40 visible before this placement truncates.
0 of 40 charactersvisible cap 40, hard cap 100
- Pinterest truncates rather than rejects: roughly the first 40 characters show in the grid before the title is cut.
Hard cap 500 characters, about 50 visible before this placement truncates.
0 of 50 charactersvisible cap 50, hard cap 500
- Hidden in the feed on most surfaces and only partly shown once the Pin is opened, at roughly 50 to 60 characters.
- The full description still feeds Pinterest search, so write the whole thing even though almost nobody reads past the first line.
Idea ad
2 copy fields on this placement.
Hard cap 100 characters, about 40 visible before this placement truncates.
0 of 40 charactersvisible cap 40, hard cap 100
- Same title behaviour as a Promoted Pin: cut in the grid, kept for search.
Hard cap 500 characters, about 50 visible before this placement truncates.
0 of 50 charactersvisible cap 50, hard cap 500
- Shown on the detail view rather than the grid. Lead with the payoff, not with context.
Pinterest Ads character limits, field by field
Every copy field Pinterest Ads accepts, grouped by placement. The hard cap is where the ad is rejected or the field stops taking input. The visible cap is where the placement truncates: the ad still runs, it just stops being read past that point.

Limits verified 2026-08-06. Character limits were checked against each network published ad specifications on 2026-08-06. Hard limits are the point at which an ad is rejected, visible limits are where a placement truncates and are approximate: they move with device width, font size and language. Platforms change these without notice, so check the ad builder before a large launch.
How Pinterest Ads compares to the other ad platforms
Where Pinterest Ads sits against the other four networks on the three fields every ad builder asks for. The number after the comma is where that placement truncates: past it the ad still serves, it just stops being read.

Visible caps and hard caps are two different limits
A hard cap is where the platform refuses the ad: the field stops accepting input, or the upload is rejected on review. You find out immediately, which makes it the harmless one. A visible cap is where the placement truncates. The ad is approved, it serves, you pay for the impressions, and the copy past that point sits behind a "See more" control that most of the feed never taps. Nothing tells you it happened.
That is why the counter above measures against the visible cap wherever a field has one. Copy that is hidden has already failed even though the ad is running, so treating the hard cap as the target is how a 3,000 character ad ends up delivering 150 characters of value. Fields turn amber inside the last 10% of the usable length, amber again once they cross the visible cap, and red only when the platform would reject them outright.
Meta (Facebook and Instagram): primary text shows about 125 of 3,000 characters
On the facebook and instagram feed placement, an ad written to the hard cap has roughly 96% of its copy hidden behind a "more" control. The ad is accepted, delivered and charged for in full either way.
LinkedIn Ads: introductory text shows about 150 of 3,000 characters
On the single image ad placement, an ad written to the hard cap has roughly 95% of its copy hidden behind a "more" control. The ad is accepted, delivered and charged for in full either way.
Pinterest Ads: description shows about 50 of 500 characters
On the promoted pin placement, an ad written to the hard cap has roughly 90% of its copy hidden behind a "more" control. The ad is accepted, delivered and charged for in full either way.
Google Ads and TikTok Ads sit outside this problem entirely: none of their copy fields publish a truncation point, so the hard cap is the only cap. A 30 character Google Ads headline is 30 characters, and the 31st is refused in the builder rather than trimmed in the auction.
Visible counts are approximate on every network. They move with device width, font size, language and whether a link preview is attached, so they are recorded here as the conservative figure each platform publishes as its recommendation rather than as a pixel measurement.
Pinterest Ads copy tips
- Put the subject in the first 40 characters of the title. That is the whole visible title in the grid, and a title that gets cut mid-phrase reads as broken rather than as intriguing.
- Make the first 50 characters of the description a complete thought. That is roughly all that shows once the Pin is opened, so a fragment that depends on the next clause is wasted.
- Write the remaining 450 characters anyway. They are indexed for Pinterest search even though they are hidden, which makes the description the only field in this whole family where writing past the fold reliably pays.
- Use the words a person would type into Pinterest search, not campaign language. Pinterest behaves like a search engine wearing a feed, and its matching reads the title, the description and the board context together.
- Give every Pin variant its own title and description. Duplicating copy across variants pointing at the same URL wastes the second Pin, because it competes with the first for the same queries.
- Idea ads follow the same caps as Promoted Pins, so one set of copy covers both. The difference is where the description appears, on the detail view rather than the grid, not how long it can be.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Pinterest ad title character limit?
One hundred characters is the hard cap for a Promoted Pin or Idea ad title. Roughly the first 40 characters show in the grid before Pinterest cuts the title, so 40 is the number to write to and 100 is the number the field accepts.
How long can a Pinterest ad description be?
Five hundred characters. It is hidden in the feed on most surfaces and only partly shown once someone opens the Pin, at roughly 50 to 60 characters, but the full text still feeds Pinterest search, so the hidden part is doing real work.
Should I write the full 500 character description?
Yes, and Pinterest is the only platform in this family where that is true. Everywhere else the copy past the fold is simply unread. On Pinterest it is indexed, so the first 50 characters sell the click and the remaining 450 help the Pin get found in the first place.
Does Pinterest reject ads that are too long?
Past 100 characters on the title or 500 on the description, yes: those are hard caps and the field will not take more. Below them Pinterest truncates rather than rejects, so a 90 character title runs perfectly well and is simply cut at about 40 in the grid.
Are Idea ad limits different from Promoted Pin limits?
No. Both take a 100 character title cut at about 40 in the grid and a 500 character description shown at about 50. The only difference is where the description surfaces: on an Idea ad it appears on the detail view rather than under the Pin in the feed.
Do hashtags help in Pinterest ad descriptions?
Far less than plain descriptive language does. Pinterest has leaned back toward keyword text, so a description written in the words someone would actually search outperforms a tag list, and every hashtag spends characters from the same 500.
