X's help center lists the bio at a maximum of 160 characters. That is enough for who you are, what you post about and one line of personality, as long as none of it is spent on filler.
This counter counts characters the way you see them. A flag, a skin tone emoji or a family emoji is one character here, even though it is built from several code points underneath. X gives the bio limit in plain characters without saying how emoji count, so its own count may differ for an emoji heavy bio. A web address typed into the bio is counted letter by letter like any other text here. Spaces and line breaks count as well, and nothing is trimmed.
The count updates as you type, shows how many characters are left, and marks where the bio goes over so you know what to cut. It all runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Tips
- Put the topic you post about in plain words. People skim a bio to decide whether to follow, and a clear subject does more than a list of job titles.
- Mention another account with its @handle rather than spelling out the name, so readers can tap straight through to it.
- Keep long URLs out of the text. Point your profile's link at one page that does the branching instead: Postify's link-in-bio page puts your socials, custom links and latest posts behind one URL.

160. That is the maximum X's help center gives for the bio, and spaces, line breaks and emoji all count toward it.
Does a link in my X bio count as 23 characters?
Not in this counter. The flat 23 character link weight belongs to X posts, and X states the bio limit in plain characters, so a web address typed into the bio is counted in full here. Use the X character counter for posts, where link weighting applies.
Is my bio saved or sent anywhere?
No. The counting happens in your browser as you type. Nothing is sent to Postify or anyone else, and nothing is kept once you close the tab.
