TikTok Video and Image Size Checker
TikTok takes 4 GB and up to 10 minutes of video, wants 1080 x 1920 at 9:16, and refuses anything shorter than 3 seconds.
Last updated: 2026-07-31
TikTok takes 4 GB per upload, several times what Threads allows at 1 GB and X at 512 MB. Runtime is where it gets specific. Video published through the content posting API tops out at 10 minutes, while some accounts can reach 60 minutes from the desktop uploader.
Shape matters more here than anywhere else. TikTok is full screen 9:16, and a 16:9 video posted untouched leaves black bars across most of the frame. The caption, the sound label and the action rail also cover the bottom sixth and the right edge, which is exactly where burned in subtitles end up if nobody checks.
Photo posts follow their own rules: up to 35 images, JPEG or WEBP rather than PNG, with the first image acting as the cover. Drop either kind of file in below and it is measured in your browser.
Your file never leaves your browser. The dimensions are read on your device and nothing is uploaded to us.
Pick a file and every TikTok format is checked against it at once.
The full spec sheet is below, so you can read the numbers without uploading anything.
TikTok video and image specs
Every TikTok surface with its own limits, in one place. These are the platform ceilings, so an upload that clears them still has to clear whatever your publishing tool allows.
TikTok Video post
| Max file size | 4 GB |
|---|---|
| Duration | 3 seconds to 10 minutes |
| Recommended size | 1080 x 1920 |
| Minimum size | 360 pixels wide |
| Aspect ratio | 9:16 recommended, 1:1.78 to 1.78:1 accepted |
| File types | MP4, MOV, WEBM |
- 10 minutes is the limit for uploads through the content posting API. Some accounts can go to 60 minutes from the desktop uploader.
- The caption, the sound label and the action rail cover the bottom sixth and the right edge of the frame.
- TikTok compresses hard on upload. A clean 1080 x 1920 H.264 export survives it better than a heavy 4K file.
TikTok Photo post
| Max file size | 20 MB |
|---|---|
| Recommended size | 1080 x 1920 |
| Aspect ratio | 9:16 recommended, 1:1.78 to 1.78:1 accepted |
| File types | JPG, WEBP |
- A photo post carries up to 35 images and the first one becomes the cover.
- The publishing API accepts JPEG and WEBP rather than PNG, so convert PNG exports before scheduling them.

TikTok export tips
- Export at 1080 x 1920 and let TikTok do the rest. Its encoder is aggressive, and a clean 1080p H.264 file survives it better than a 4K master.
- Keep subtitles above the bottom sixth of the frame, clear of the caption and the sound label.
- Anything under 3 seconds is rejected outright. The shortest video worth posting is closer to 7, which is roughly where a loop starts to work.
- Convert PNG exports to JPEG or WEBP before scheduling a photo post. The publishing API does not accept PNG.
- Put the hook in the first frame rather than behind a title card. That frame is also the thumbnail in your profile grid.
Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum video size on TikTok?
4 GB per file, against 1 GB on Threads and 512 MB on X. It is rarely the thing that stops a TikTok upload: runtime and shape are the limits that actually bite.
How long can a TikTok video be?
10 minutes through the content posting API that scheduling tools use, and up to 60 minutes for some accounts uploading from the desktop site. The minimum is 3 seconds.
What size should a TikTok video be?
1080 x 1920 at 9:16, full screen vertical. TikTok accepts anything between 9:16 and 16:9, but wider footage is letterboxed and gives up most of the screen.
Can I post photos on TikTok?
Yes. A photo post carries up to 35 images and the first one becomes the cover. The publishing API accepts JPEG and WEBP files, so PNG exports have to be converted first.
Why is my TikTok video blurry after uploading?
TikTok re-encodes every upload. A very large or very high bitrate file gives the encoder more to throw away, so a clean 1080 x 1920 H.264 export usually looks sharper in the app than a 4K master does.
