An Instagram caption holds 2,200 characters. That is more room than almost anyone uses, and it is not the number that decides whether a caption works. The feed collapses your text after roughly 125 characters behind a "... more" link, so the opening sentence is doing all of the work.
The two caps that actually bite are hashtags and tags: 5 hashtags per post and 20 accounts mentioned. Go over either one and Instagram will not publish the caption as written, which is a frustrating way to lose a post you already scheduled.

Instagram caption tips
- Put the hook inside the first 125 characters. Everything after the fold is opt in, and most of the feed never opts in.
- Use line breaks. Instagram preserves them in captions, and a three line caption with air around it reads far better than one dense block of text.
- Stop at 5 hashtags. Instagram cut the cap from 30 to 5, so the old habit of a long tag block now stops the post from going out. Pick the most specific tags you have.
- Keep mentions under 20 and check that every handle exists. A mistyped @ tag still counts against the cap without tagging anyone.
- Only move context into the first comment when it genuinely is an afterthought. Instagram reads caption text for search and treats comments as far weaker signal.

How many accounts can I tag in an Instagram caption?
Twenty. That is separate from the people you tag on the image itself, which has its own limit of 20 per photo. Both caps are enforced when you publish, not while you type.
Do Reels captions have the same limit?
Yes, Reels use the same 2,200 character caption field as feed posts, with the same 5 hashtag and 20 mention caps. The visible portion is smaller though, because the caption overlays the video rather than sitting under it.
