An Instagram caption holds 2,200 characters. That is more room than almost anyone uses, and it is not the number that decides whether a caption works. The feed collapses your text after roughly 125 characters behind a "... more" link, so the opening sentence is doing all of the work.
The two caps that actually bite are hashtags and tags: 30 hashtags per caption and 20 accounts mentioned. Cross either one and Instagram refuses the caption outright rather than trimming it, which is a frustrating way to lose a post you already scheduled.

Instagram caption tips
- Put the hook inside the first 125 characters. Everything after the fold is opt in, and most of the feed never opts in.
- Use line breaks. Instagram preserves them in captions, and a three line caption with air around it reads far better than one dense block of text.
- Stay well under 30 hashtags. Instagram rejects the caption at 31 rather than trimming it, and 3 to 5 relevant tags reliably beat a wall of thirty.
- Keep mentions under 20 and check that every handle exists. A mistyped @ tag still counts against the cap without tagging anyone.
- Only move context into the first comment when it genuinely is an afterthought. Instagram reads caption text for search and treats comments as far weaker signal.
