Threads Video and Image Size Checker

Threads has the loosest shape rules of any Meta app, accepting 0.01:1 to 10:1, with video capped at 5 minutes against 15 on an Instagram Reel and four hours on a Facebook feed video.

Last updated: 2026-07-31

Threads is unusually relaxed about shape. The accepted aspect ratio range runs from 0.01:1 to 10:1, which means a thin banner and a very tall screenshot both post without complaint. Nothing gets cropped either: media is scaled to fit the post instead.

Time is the limit that bites. Video tops out at 5 minutes, against 15 on an Instagram Reel and four hours on a Facebook feed video, alongside a 1 GB file cap. Images have the same 8 MB allowance as an Instagram feed photo, and a carousel carries up to 20 items, double what Instagram allows.

The checker below reads your file on your device and reports exactly where it lands against those numbers.

Your file never leaves your browser. The dimensions are read on your device and nothing is uploaded to us.

Pick a file and every Threads format is checked against it at once.

The full spec sheet is below, so you can read the numbers without uploading anything.

File cleared? The rest of it, from connecting the account to scheduling the upload, is in our Threads guide.

How to post to Threads

Threads video and image specs

Every Threads surface with its own limits, in one place. These are the platform ceilings, so an upload that clears them still has to clear whatever your publishing tool allows.

Threads Post image

Max file size8 MB
Recommended size1080 x 1350
Aspect ratio4:5 recommended, 1:100 to 10:1 accepted
File typesJPG, PNG
  • Threads accepts almost any shape, from a thin banner to a tall screenshot, and scales it to fit the post instead of cropping it.
  • Screenshots of text are the format that gets reposted most here, so legibility matters more than resolution.

Threads Post video

Max file size1 GB
DurationUp to 5 minutes
Recommended size1080 x 1920
Aspect ratio9:16 recommended, 1:100 to 10:1 accepted
BitrateUp to 25 Mbps
File typesMP4, MOV
  • Five minutes is the ceiling, well short of an Instagram Reel at 15 minutes or a Facebook feed video at four hours, and 1 GB is the file limit.
  • Anything wider than 3840 pixels is downscaled during processing, so exporting above 4K is wasted upload time.

Threads Carousel

Max file size1 GB
DurationUp to 5 minutes
Recommended size1080 x 1350
Aspect ratio4:5 recommended, 1:100 to 10:1 accepted
File typesJPG, PNG, MP4, MOV
  • Up to 20 items per carousel, double what Instagram allows, and images and video can be mixed.
  • Each item keeps its own aspect ratio rather than being cropped to match the first one.

Specs verified 2026-07-31. Networks adjust these without announcing them, so re-check anything you are about to build a whole shoot around.

Threads export tips

  • Screenshots of text are the native currency here, so optimise for legibility at phone size rather than for resolution.
  • Keep video under 5 minutes or it will not post at all. There is no in-app trim step to fall back on the way there is on Instagram.
  • Anything wider than 3840 pixels is downscaled during processing, so a 4K master is the practical ceiling worth exporting to.
  • A Threads carousel holds 20 items and each keeps its own aspect ratio, so a mixed set of screenshots and photos stays intact.
  • A Reel export at 1080 x 1920 posts here unchanged, which makes Threads the cheapest network to add to an existing vertical workflow.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum video length on Threads?

5 minutes. That is shorter than Instagram Reels at 15 minutes and much shorter than TikTok at 10, so a long clip usually needs cutting before it can be posted here.

What is the Threads video size limit?

1 GB per file. Paired with the 5 minute ceiling, that is far more headroom than the duration limit will ever let you use.

What aspect ratio does Threads support?

Anything from 0.01:1 to 10:1, so effectively any shape at all. 4:5 for images and 9:16 for video fill the most screen, but nothing outside those is rejected.

How many images can a Threads post have?

Up to 20 in a carousel, and images and video can be mixed. Each item keeps its own aspect ratio rather than being cropped to match the first one.

What is the Threads image size limit?

8 MB per image, the same as an Instagram feed photo. 1080 x 1350 is the size worth exporting at, and PNG screenshots are fine as long as they stay under the cap.
