Threads keeps posts short on purpose: 500 characters each, the same ceiling it launched with. That is about three or four sentences, which is room for one clear idea and not much else.
When you need more, the answer is a chain. Reply to your own post and keep going; each reply gets a fresh 500 characters and the whole thing reads as one unit. Breaking on a sentence boundary rather than mid-thought is the difference between a chain that reads deliberately and one that reads like a truncation bug.
Threads also broke with the hashtag habit. A post carries a single topic tag instead of a block of them, and that tag is charged against the same 500 characters as everything else.

Threads caption tips
- Split at sentence boundaries, never at exactly 500. A chain that breaks mid-clause reads as a technical failure rather than as pacing.
- The first post in a chain is the only one most people see in the feed, so it has to work as a standalone statement.
- One topic tag per post, and pick one people would actually browse. There is no equivalent of an Instagram style tag block here.
- Links are not weighted on Threads the way they are on X. A long URL spends every one of its characters, so shorten it before you paste.
- Cross-posting a full 2,200 character Instagram caption will not fit. Rewrite it for 500 rather than letting something truncate it for you.

How many characters can a Threads post have?
Five hundred characters per post, including spaces, emoji, links and the topic tag. The limit applies to every post in a chain individually, not to the chain as a whole.
Can I write longer posts on Threads?
Not in a single post. The way around it is to reply to your own post and continue there, which gives you another 500 characters per reply. Threads displays the chain together, so readers experience it as one longer piece.
How many hashtags can I use on Threads?
One. Threads replaced the traditional hashtag block with a single topic tag per post, and its text counts toward your 500 characters like anything else.
Do links count as full characters on Threads?
Yes. Unlike X, which charges a flat 23 characters for any URL, Threads counts the entire link as written. A long tracking URL can eat a fifth of your post.
Is the Threads limit the same as Instagram?
No, and the gap is large. Instagram allows 2,200 characters per caption, Threads allows 500. If you publish to both from one draft, write for 500 and expand for Instagram rather than the other way round.
