Pinterest is stricter about shape than it looks. A standard Pin should be 1000 x 1500 at 2:3, and while the feed accepts other ratios, anything meaningfully taller is truncated in the grid rather than shrunk to fit. A 1000 x 3000 infographic does not appear as a long thin Pin, it appears as the top half of one.
On the generous side, the file cap is 20 MB, tied with TikTok photo posts for the most room of any network here. There is genuinely no reason to over-compress a Pin: the surface rewards detail, people zoom into Pins far more than they zoom into feed posts, and a crisp 1000 x 1500 JPEG at high quality is only a few hundred kilobytes.

0.85 is the safe default. Push to 0.95 for images with text, drop toward 0.7 only when you are fighting a tight file size cap.
Re-encoding through canvas also drops the EXIF block, so the file you download carries no GPS coordinates, camera model or timestamp.

JPEG or PNG, and what the quality slider does
The resolution decides whether your image fits the frame. The format and the quality setting decide whether it fits the file size cap, and those are two different problems.
JPEG
Photographs, screenshots of video, anything with gradients
Lossy, and that is the point: a 1080 pixel wide photo lands between 100 KB and 500 KB at quality 0.85, which clears every file size cap on this page with room to spare. The artifacts it introduces hide well in detail and texture.
PNG
Logos, charts, diagrams, screenshots of text, flat color
Lossless, so text stays crisp and flat areas stay flat. The cost is size: the same image can be five to ten times larger than the JPEG, which is what pushes a thumbnail past 2 MB or a Facebook image past 4 MB.
The quality slider only applies to JPEG, and it runs from 0.6 to 1.0. At 0.85, the default here, the difference from the original is invisible at normal viewing size on almost any photograph. Above 0.95 the file grows quickly for very little gain. Below about 0.75 you start to see blocking in skies and other large flat areas, which is the first thing that gives away an over-compressed image.
One thing worth knowing either way: every network re-compresses what you upload. Exporting at maximum quality does not protect the detail, it just means the image is compressed twice. A clean file at the recommended size and a sensible quality survives that better than an enormous one.
Pinterest image tips
- Export at 1000 x 1500. Two by three is the ratio the grid is laid out for, and it is the only shape guaranteed to be shown complete.
- Do not go taller to get more space. Pinterest truncates rather than scales, so the bottom of a very tall Pin is simply not seen in the feed.
- Use the 20 MB cap. Quality 0.9 or higher is worth it here because Pins get zoomed and saved rather than scrolled past, and there is plenty of room in the budget.
- Put any text in the top third. That is the part guaranteed to be visible in the grid, and it is what someone reads before deciding to open the Pin.
- Keep a margin inside the frame. Pins are rendered with rounded corners, so content pushed right to the edge gets clipped at the corners.
- Turn a landscape photo into a vertical Pin deliberately, not by accident. Use the focus grid so the crop lands on the subject rather than on the middle of a wide shot.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a Pinterest Pin be?
1000 x 1500 pixels at 2:3, under a 20 MB file cap, as a JPG or PNG. Pinterest accepts ratios from about 1:2 up to 1.91:1, but 2:3 is what the feed is designed around, and taller Pins are truncated in the grid rather than scaled to fit.
Is my image uploaded when I use this Pin resizer?
No. The file is decoded and redrawn with canvas inside your browser, and the resized Pin goes straight to your downloads folder. Nothing is sent to our servers, and nothing reaches Pinterest until you upload it yourself.
Why can this tool not open my iPhone photo?
HEIC, the default iPhone format, cannot be decoded by most browsers. Export a JPEG copy from the Photos app, or set Settings, Camera, Formats to Most Compatible. Pinterest accepts JPG and PNG for a standard Pin, so HEIC would not upload there either.
Does resizing strip location data from the image?
Yes. The Pin is encoded from a fresh canvas, so it carries no EXIF metadata: no GPS coordinates, no camera model, no timestamp. Pins of homes, studios and workshops are common on Pinterest, which makes that worth knowing.
Will resizing reduce the quality of my Pin?
Very little at 1000 x 1500 with the quality slider at 0.9. Pinterest gives you 20 MB, so this is the one network where erring toward higher quality costs nothing. Use PNG for graphics with flat color and text, JPEG for photographs.
Can I use a square or landscape image as a Pin?
You can, and it will publish, but it takes up much less of the vertical feed and performs accordingly. Crop it to 2:3 with the focus point on the subject instead: a 1000 x 1500 Pin made from a landscape photo occupies more than twice the screen height of the original shape.
