Facebook Video and Image Size Checker

Facebook is generous with video and stingy with images: 4 GB and four hours of footage, against a 4 MB ceiling on a single photo.

Last updated: 2026-07-31

The published Facebook video limits are enormous: 4 GB per file and 240 minutes of runtime. The image limit runs the other way. A photo has to fit inside 4 MB, lower than any other network here allows for a post image, and it is the reason most Facebook uploads fail.

The second catch is the gap between what Facebook accepts and what a scheduling tool can send. Feed video published through the Pages API is commonly capped around 300 MB and 90 seconds. Anything longer belongs in a native upload, which is worth knowing before you plan a ten minute video around a scheduled slot.

Drop your file in below and it is checked against the feed, Reels and Stories rules at the same time, without leaving your browser.

Your file never leaves your browser. The dimensions are read on your device and nothing is uploaded to us.

Pick a file and every Facebook format is checked against it at once.

The full spec sheet is below, so you can read the numbers without uploading anything.

File cleared? The rest of it, from connecting the account to scheduling the upload, is in our Facebook guide.

How to post to Facebook

Facebook video and image specs

Every Facebook surface with its own limits, in one place. These are the platform ceilings, so an upload that clears them still has to clear whatever your publishing tool allows.

Facebook Feed image

Max file size4 MB
Recommended size1200 x 630
Aspect ratio1.91:1 recommended, 1:1.78 to 1.91:1 accepted
File typesJPG, PNG
  • Link previews render at 1.91:1. A photo post keeps whatever ratio you upload, so the same file gets two different crops.
  • The 4 MB cap is lower than any other network here allows for a post image, and it is the single most common Facebook upload rejection.

Facebook Feed video

Max file size4 GB
Duration1 second to 4 hours
Recommended size1080 x 1350
Aspect ratio4:5 recommended, 1:1.78 to 1.78:1 accepted
BitrateUp to 25 Mbps
File typesMP4, MOV
  • 4 GB and 240 minutes are the ceilings Facebook publishes. They are not advice: feed video under a minute holds attention far better.
  • Scheduling tools publish feed video through the Pages API, which is commonly capped around 300 MB and 90 seconds. Longer cuts need a native upload.

Facebook Reel

Max file size4 GB
Duration3 seconds to 90 seconds
Recommended size1080 x 1920
Minimum size540 x 960
Aspect ratio9:16 recommended, 1:2 to 1:1 accepted
BitrateUp to 25 Mbps
File typesMP4, MOV
  • Facebook does not publish a separate size ceiling for Reels, so the 4 GB video limit applies.
  • A Reel that also runs on Instagram can be the same export: both surfaces want 1080 x 1920 at 9:16.

Facebook Story

Max file size100 MB
Duration3 seconds to 60 seconds
Recommended size1080 x 1920
Aspect ratio9:16 recommended, 1:2 to 1:1 accepted
BitrateUp to 25 Mbps
File typesMP4, MOV, JPG, PNG
  • One card holds 60 seconds. Anything longer is split into cards when you post from the app.
  • Stories are cropped aggressively on tall phones, so keep anything important away from the outer 10 percent of the frame.

Specs verified 2026-07-31. Networks adjust these without announcing them, so re-check anything you are about to build a whole shoot around.

Facebook export tips

  • Export photos as JPG at around quality 80. A 1200 x 630 PNG regularly sails past 4 MB while the same image as a JPG lands nearer 300 KB.
  • Shoot feed video at 4:5 rather than 16:9. Portrait occupies more of a phone screen, and the feed stopped rewarding widescreen years ago.
  • Reels are capped at 90 seconds, so a Reel and a feed cut of the same footage are two exports, not one file posted twice.
  • Burn in captions instead of relying on autoplay sound. Video starts muted here, and the first three seconds decide whether anyone unmutes it.
  • A link preview renders at 1.91:1 while a photo post keeps whatever shape you upload. Check which one you are publishing before you pick a crop.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum video size on Facebook?

4 GB per file, with a runtime ceiling of 240 minutes. In practice, video published through a scheduling tool goes out through the Pages API, which commonly caps the file around 300 MB and 90 seconds.

What is the Facebook image size limit?

4 MB per image, lower than any other network here allows for a post image. Only a YouTube thumbnail, at 2 MB, is tighter anywhere on this site. The recommended size is 1200 x 630, and switching the export from PNG to JPG is usually the entire fix.

How long can a Facebook Reel be?

90 seconds, with a 3 second minimum, at 1080 x 1920 in 9:16. Facebook does not publish a separate size limit for Reels, so the 4 GB video ceiling applies to them too.

What video size is best for the Facebook feed?

1080 x 1350 at 4:5. Facebook accepts anything from 9:16 to 16:9, but portrait takes the most space on mobile, where nearly all of the watching happens.

How long can a Facebook Story be?

60 seconds per card at 1080 x 1920, inside a 100 MB file. Longer clips are split into cards when you post from the app and rejected when you schedule them, so cut them yourself first.
