LinkedIn posts hold 3,000 characters and offer no formatting, so a bold subheading is pasted Unicode. Use it sparingly: this is the network where decoration costs you credibility.

Last updated: 2026-08-03

The LinkedIn composer has no bold button. A post can run to 3,000 characters with no way to mark a heading, which is why the long posts that read well on LinkedIn use pasted Unicode for their subheadings.

Restraint matters more here than on any other network. LinkedIn is a professional feed and the audience has learned to associate heavy styling with engagement bait, so the same script alphabet that looks playful on Instagram reads as a warning sign in a post from a consultant. Bold for a subheading, italic for a single aside, and nothing else, is the pattern that survives contact with a skeptical reader.

There is a second cost that is specific to LinkedIn. Your headline, your job titles and your About section are all indexed by recruiter search, and recruiters search in plain letters. A styled headline is a headline that quietly stops matching queries for your own job title.

Styled letters cost the same as plain ones, and LinkedIn allows 3,000 characters in a caption. Decoration is spent out of that budget, not on top of it. Only about 210 of them show before the feed folds the rest away, so anything you style belongs above that line.

How these fonts work

They are not fonts, and the difference is the reason they work at all. A font is a file your device installs and an app chooses to use. No social network lets you choose one for a bio or a caption. What you are copying here is a different set of characters that were drawn to look like styled letters.

Most of them come from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, added to Unicode so that a bold A meaning a matrix could be distinguished from an ordinary A meaning a variable. That gave the standard a complete bold alphabet, a complete italic one, script, fraktur, double struck and monospace, each with its own permanent code points. To a caption field they are simply letters, so they travel wherever text travels.

Not formatting

There is no bold flag attached to your text. The letter itself is a different character, which is why it survives a copy, a paste and a database round trip.

Support varies

A character only appears if the reader device has a glyph for it. Older phones show an empty rectangle instead. Bold, italic and script are the safest; squared, circled and inverted styles break first.

Gaps are permanent

Some letters were never encoded: there is no small capital Q or X and no superscript q. Those pass through unchanged, because the alternative is substituting a character that means something else.

A few styles work differently again. Strikethrough and underline do not replace your letters at all: they keep them and add an invisible combining mark after each one, which your device draws on top. That is why those two work on any alphabet, including accented letters and scripts these symbol blocks never covered.

Read this before you style a whole caption

These characters have a real cost, and most tools that generate them do not mention it. It is worth knowing exactly what you are trading before you decide it is worth it.

  • Screen readers cannot read them as words. VoiceOver and TalkBack either announce each character by its Unicode name, one at a time, or skip it in silence. A caption written entirely in styled text is not a difficult read for a blind follower, it is an impossible one.
  • Use it for a word or two. A styled name, a single subheading or one emphasized phrase is a design choice that costs almost nothing. A styled paragraph is a wall of near-identical shapes that is slower to read for everyone, not only for people using assistive technology.
  • Keep hashtags and mentions plain, always. Every network builds those links by matching literal characters. A styled hashtag is not parsed as a tag and a styled @ mention notifies nobody, so both become decoration that does none of the work you added them for.
  • Search does not see styled words. In-app search, and any recruiter or discovery feature built on it, matches the characters you typed rather than the letters they resemble. A styled keyword is a keyword nobody can find.

All 23 styles, side by side

Every style below is rendered from the same words, "Your name here", so you can compare them honestly. If a row shows empty boxes on your screen, that style has no glyphs on this device and your readers on similar devices will see the same thing.

LinkedIn styling tips

  • Bold for subheadings only. On a long post it gives the reader somewhere to land, and it is the one use of styled text nobody on LinkedIn objects to.
  • Leave your headline plain. Recruiter search matches literal characters, so a styled job title is a job title that no longer appears in results for itself.
  • The first 210 characters are all that shows on desktop before "...see more", and closer to 140 on mobile, so any emphasis belongs above that line.
  • Never style a whole post. On LinkedIn that reads as engagement bait, and the comments will tell you so.
  • Skip the script, fraktur and circled styles entirely here. They are the ones that make a professional post look like a chain message.
  • Line breaks do most of the work styling is trying to do. A one line paragraph with air around it earns more expands than a bold one.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real fonts on LinkedIn?

No. LinkedIn has no formatting controls in the post composer or the profile fields. These are separate Unicode characters, mostly from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, that look like bold or italic letters. LinkedIn stores exactly what you paste, so the appearance carries through.

Why do some letters not change?

The character does not exist. Unicode assigned no small capital Q or X and no superscript q, so those letters pass through unstyled. Everything the tool cannot map is left exactly as typed rather than replaced with a lookalike from another script.

Will everyone see bold text on LinkedIn?

Most people will, on both the web and the mobile apps. Rendering depends on the reader device fonts, so an older phone can show empty boxes, and bold and italic have far better coverage than the decorative styles. Given the audience, bold and italic are the only two worth the risk here anyway.

Does styled text hurt reach or accessibility on LinkedIn?

Yes on both counts, and more than elsewhere. Screen readers announce these characters one by one or skip them, so a styled post excludes readers using assistive technology, which is a poor look on a professional network. LinkedIn also indexes your profile and posts as literal text, so styled words drop out of both member search and recruiter search.

Can I use these fonts in my LinkedIn headline or bio?

You can paste them into the headline, the About section and post text, but the headline is the one place we would advise against it. It is the field recruiters search hardest, and styling it removes you from results for your own role. The About section is a safer place for one bold subheading.

Where does styled text survive on LinkedIn?

Posts, comments, articles, the headline and the About section all keep the characters as pasted. Where it works against you is anywhere LinkedIn treats text as data: member search, recruiter search, skills and job title matching all read literal characters, so styled text in those fields is text the platform cannot match.
