Can you schedule Instagram Stories? Stories, Reels and carousels explained
Instagram lets you schedule some formats in its own app, some only in Meta Business Suite, and some only through third-party tools with limits of their own. This guide goes format by format, Stories, Reels, carousels and photos, and says what each option can and cannot do, based on Meta's own help center and developer documentation as read on 2026-10-23.

TL;DR: Yes, you can schedule Instagram Stories, but not in the Instagram app. The app schedules reels, photos and carousels for public accounts, up to 25 posts a day and 30 days ahead. Stories can be scheduled for free in Meta Business Suite, which also adds stickers and links. Third-party schedulers publish Stories, Reels and carousels through Instagram's API, without link, poll or location stickers.

Can you schedule Instagram Stories?
Yes, though not in the Instagram app itself. Instagram's scheduling article covers reels, photos and carousels only. Stories can be scheduled for free in Meta Business Suite, on desktop or in its mobile app, and third-party schedulers publish them through Instagram's API, which supports images, videos and mentions but not link, poll or location stickers.
The answer changes with the format, so it helps to see all three routes side by side. The Instagram app is the simplest but skips Stories. Meta Business Suite is free, covers every format and keeps Story stickers and links. Third-party tools add other networks and team features, but they can only do what Instagram's API allows.
| Format | Instagram app | Meta Business Suite | Third-party tools (API) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photo posts | Yes, up to 30 days ahead | Yes | Yes, JPEG images only |
| Carousels | Yes | Yes (its post page notes a 10 photo limit for Instagram) | Yes, up to 20 images and videos |
| Reels | Yes | Yes, but not a reel made from photos | Yes, 3 seconds to 15 minutes |
| Stories | No scheduling documented | Yes, with stickers and a link | Yes, without link, poll or location stickers |
| Product tags | Not with scheduled content | Not stated | Not supported with Instagram Login |
What the Instagram app can schedule
The Instagram app schedules reels, photos and carousel posts for public accounts: up to 25 posts a day, up to 30 days in advance. You turn on Schedule this post or Schedule this reel under More options. Product tags, collaborative posts, sponsored posts and fundraisers cannot be scheduled, and the article never mentions Stories.
Instagram's help center says only that you need a public account; it does not ask for a business or creator account, which makes the app the one route open to a public personal profile. Scheduled content keeps the privacy and audience settings you had when you scheduled it.
To manage what is waiting, go to your profile and, below Your insights and tools, tap Scheduled content. From there you can delete a post, edit it, reschedule it or share it now.
On a computer, Instagram's help pages explain how to post from instagram.com but say nothing about scheduling there. If you plan from a desktop, Meta Business Suite or a third-party tool is the documented route.
Steps
- Create the post. Start a reel, photo or carousel post as usual and get it ready to share, with caption and settings.
- Open More options. On the last screen before sharing, tap More options.
- Turn on scheduling. Turn on Schedule this post or Schedule this reel, then choose a date and time up to 30 days ahead.
- Check it later. Find it on your profile under Scheduled content, where you can edit, reschedule, delete or share it now.
How to schedule Instagram Stories
Use Meta Business Suite or a third-party scheduler. In Business Suite on desktop, create a story, add up to 10 photos or videos, add text, mentions, stickers or a link, then choose Schedule under Scheduling options. In its mobile app, pick Stories and tap Schedule for later. Third-party tools publish Stories through the API.
Meta Business Suite is free on desktop and in its mobile app, and it works inside a business portfolio that holds your Facebook Page and Instagram account. Its Planner shows posts, stories, reels and ads on one calendar, and you can reschedule a scheduled story later, as you can a post or reel.
Meta also warns that a scheduled post may not publish at its time because of a system error, so check the Planner after anything important was due to go out.
Meta is also moving some Story scheduling into a paid plan. Its Meta One subscription, announced on 15 September 2026, lists scheduling stories up to 30 days in advance among the features of its Advanced plan for businesses and creators. Meta's announcement does not say which app those features appear in, so check before paying for that alone.
Third-party tools are the route when you plan Stories alongside other networks. Through the API they can publish image and video Stories and mention users, but Meta's reference says publishing stickers, such as link, poll or location stickers, is not supported. If a Story needs a tappable link, schedule it in Business Suite or post it from the app.
Steps
- Create a story. In Meta Business Suite, start a new story and choose your Instagram account.
- Add media. Click Add photo/video and upload up to 10 photos or videos.
- Edit it. Click Edit to crop, trim a video, or add text, mentions or stickers. Click Add link to add a URL.
- Schedule it. Under Scheduling options, select Schedule and pick the date and time.
Can you schedule Instagram Reels?
Yes. Reels can be scheduled in the Instagram app with Schedule this reel, in Meta Business Suite and through third-party tools. Through the API, a reel can run from 3 seconds to 15 minutes and up to 300 MB, as MOV or MP4, with options to share it to your feed and to publish it as a trial reel.
Meta Business Suite schedules reels on desktop and mobile, or saves them as drafts. Two limits apply when the reel goes to Instagram: you cannot create a reel from photos, and you cannot edit a reel from a video there. Its audio and editing tools are for reels posted to Facebook.
Through the API, Meta recommends a 9:16 frame, and its reference says music tagging is only available for original audio. If a reel needs a track from Instagram's own music library, add it in the Instagram app instead.
One detail can confuse reports: after publishing a reel through the API, Instagram reports its media type as VIDEO, not REELS. That is how the API labels it, and it is still a reel.
Can you schedule Instagram carousels?
Yes. The Instagram app schedules carousel posts like any other post, and Instagram allows up to 20 photos and videos in one carousel. Through the API, a carousel can also hold up to 20 images and videos, mixed, and it counts as a single post toward the publishing limit. Videos inside a carousel do not count as reels.
Not every tool uses the full 20. Meta Business Suite's own page on creating posts notes that the limit for posting to Instagram is 10 photos, and many third-party schedulers set their own cap, so check the number before you build a long carousel.
Every item in an API carousel goes through the same image and video checks as a single post: images must be JPEG, up to 8 MB and between 4:5 and 1.91:1. Reels cannot be placed inside a carousel.
What third-party schedulers cannot do on Instagram
Through Instagram's API, schedulers cannot add shopping tags, filters or Story stickers such as links, polls and locations, and images must be JPEG. Accounts must be professional, business or creator, and Meta caps how many posts each account can publish through the API per day. Collaborators work on feed posts, reels and carousels, not on Stories.
The API has no publish time field for Instagram. A scheduler stores your post and publishes it at the time you chose, which is why it needs your account connected and why a tool's reliability matters as much as its features.
Which login an app uses also changes what it can do. Meta's overview lists Instagram Login, which needs no linked Facebook Page, and Facebook Login, for accounts linked to a Page. Both support publishing, comments, insights and messaging; product tagging, hashtag search and partnership ads are not supported with Instagram Login.
- Daily cap: the content publishing guide says 100 API-published posts in a moving 24 hours, while the publish endpoint reference says 50. Carousels count as one post either way.
- Story video: 3 to 60 seconds and up to 100 MB.
- Images: JPEG only, up to 8 MB, 4:5 to 1.91:1, at least 320 pixels wide. Alt text of up to 1,000 characters is supported on image posts.
- Collaborators: up to 3 usernames on feed images, reels and carousels; not supported on Stories.
- Containers: a prepared post expires after 24 hours, and an account can create 400 of them in a rolling 24 hours.
- Page Publishing Authorization: an account linked to a Page that requires it cannot be published to until it is completed.
What Postify schedules on Instagram
Postify publishes Instagram photos, carousels, Reels and Stories directly at the scheduled time, with no reminder step, through Instagram Login on a professional account. Carousels take 2 to 10 photos or videos, Story videos run up to 60 seconds, and Reels up to 15 minutes. Like every API tool, it cannot add Story stickers or product tags.
Postify is one of the third-party options, and we make it. On top of the formats above, photo posts can carry alt text, collaborators and a location, and Instagram posts get a first comment on the Plus plan and up. A feed grid preview shows how a planned post will sit on your profile before it goes out.
The same post can go to the other networks Postify publishes to, Facebook, Threads, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, X, Pinterest and Plative, with a caption per network. Facebook Pages also get Stories and Reels. Plans start at €9.99 a month for Hobby, which covers one brand, one user and 15 posts a month; there is no free plan.
- Reels: choose whether a reel also shows in your feed, or publish it as one of Instagram's trial reels.
- Not included: link, poll and location stickers, shopping tags and music from Instagram's library, which the API does not offer.
Frequently asked questions
- Can you schedule an Instagram Story with a link?
- Yes, in Meta Business Suite on desktop: when you create a story, click Add link to add a URL, then schedule it. Third-party schedulers cannot add the link sticker, because Meta's API does not support publishing stickers on Stories.
- Why can I not schedule Stories in the Instagram app?
- Instagram's scheduling feature, as its help center describes it, covers reels, photos and carousel posts only. The help center has no article on scheduling Stories in the app. Use Meta Business Suite or a third-party scheduler for Stories.
- Can you schedule Instagram posts from a computer?
- Instagram's help pages explain posting from instagram.com but do not describe scheduling there. Meta Business Suite on desktop schedules posts, stories and reels, and third-party schedulers work in the browser too.
- How far ahead can you schedule Instagram posts?
- In the Instagram app, up to 30 days ahead, with up to 25 scheduled posts a day. Meta Business Suite's help pages do not state a window, and third-party tools set their own, since Instagram's API publishes at the moment the tool sends the post.
- Do you need a business account to schedule Instagram posts?
- Not for the Instagram app, which only requires a public account. Third-party schedulers need a professional account, business or creator, because Instagram's API only publishes to professional accounts. Meta Business Suite works through a business portfolio.
- Do scheduled Instagram posts get less reach?
- Meta has not said that scheduled posts are ranked lower, and Instagram describes ranking in terms of signals about the post, the account and the viewer. Our guide on whether scheduling hurts reach goes through the evidence.
