X (Twitter) Thread Maker

Paste a draft of any length and get a numbered X thread back, with every post measured against 280 characters and every link charged the flat 23 that X charges.

Last updated: 2026-08-03

A thread is how anything longer than a paragraph gets published on X. The limit is 280 characters per post for a standard account, and the way you get past it is to reply to yourself, not to write more.

The two things that make hand-splitting painful are both handled here. Links do not cost what they look like: X rewrites every URL through t.co and bills you 23 characters no matter what, so a post that looks 340 characters long in a text editor may fit comfortably. And numbering is text, so a "1/12 " prefix quietly takes six characters off every post in the thread.

This thread maker packs whole sentences into each post, reserves the right amount of room for the numbering style you pick, and flags any post that still comes out over the line. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored.

Links are weighted at 23 characters each, the way X charges them.

The prefix spends characters like any other text, so it is reserved before the split. A single post is never numbered.

Your thread for X (Twitter)

Paste your draft above and it appears here as numbered posts, each one packed with whole sentences and measured against the 280 characters X (Twitter) allows. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored.

Breaks land on sentence boundaries, and paragraph breaks in your draft are preferred over sentence ones.

Thread split? The rest of the workflow, from connecting the account to scheduling the whole chain, is in our X (Twitter) guide.

How to post to X (Twitter)

Limits on X and Threads

Both networks cap a single post and expect anything longer to become a chain. The difference is what a character costs: X rewrites links and charges a flat rate for them, Threads charges every character of the URL as written.

NetworkTierLimit per postWhat that means in a chain
X (Twitter)Standard account280 charsEvery link counts as 23 characters no matter its length
X (Twitter)Premium account25,000 charsA standard post never folds. Premium posts longer than 280 characters collapse behind a "Show more" toggle in the timeline.
ThreadsEvery account500 charsEach post in a chain gets its own 500 characters, so longer thoughts are split across replies rather than stretched.

Limits verified 2026-07-31. Threads has no classic hashtag block: a post carries a single topic tag, and its text is charged against the same 500 characters.

Thread numbering conventions

Numbering is a reading cue, not a formality: it tells someone how much is left before they decide whether to start. It is also plain text, so whichever style you pick is charged against the same limit as your sentences.

1/5

1/5 style

The default. Readers can see how much is left before they commit, and anyone landing on post 4 knows there are three above it.

1/

1/ style

For threads you might extend later. Nothing promises a length, so adding a post the next morning does not make every earlier number wrong.

No prefix

No numbering

When each post has to stand alone, for example if you expect individual posts to be reshared out of context. You lose the reading cue.

The cost is small but it is paid on every post. On X a "12/14 " prefix takes 6 characters off all 14 posts, which is 84 characters of thread gone. The splitter works that reserve out before it packs, and it drops numbering entirely when your text fits in one post.

X (Twitter) thread tips

  • The first post is the whole pitch. It is the only one the timeline shows to people who do not already follow you, so it has to earn the tap on its own.
  • One link costs 23 characters, two cost 46. Put the single link you care about in the last post and leave the rest of the thread clean.
  • Attach media instead of describing it. Images, videos and GIFs cost nothing against the 280, so a screenshot is often the cheapest way to add the detail that will not fit.
  • Reply to your own post to continue the thread. Do not publish the parts separately and hope people find them, an orphaned post 4 reads as a fragment.
  • X Premium raises the ceiling to 25,000 characters, but the timeline still only shows the first 280 before a "Show more" toggle, so a thread usually still outperforms one long post.
  • If the split lands a punchline in the middle of a post, move the break by hand. Sentence boundaries are a good default, not an editorial judgment.

Frequently asked questions

Does the numbering count against the 280 character limit?

Yes. "1/12 " is five characters of your 280 and every post in the thread pays it. This tool reserves room for the widest prefix before it packs, so no post goes over once the numbers are added.

How does X count links in a thread?

Every URL is wrapped in a t.co link and charged at a flat 23 characters regardless of its real length. Shortening a URL before you paste it saves you nothing on X. This splitter applies the same 23 character weight, so the counts you see match the composer.

Is anything I paste uploaded or saved?

No. The whole thread is built in your browser, nothing is sent anywhere, and nothing is stored. There is no account step and no email gate.

How many posts should a Twitter thread have?

Five to ten is the range that holds together. Threads shorter than three rarely need to be threads at all, and past fifteen posts the drop-off between the first and the last is severe enough that the ending is barely read.

Do I still need this if I have X Premium?

Often yes. Premium lets a single post run to 25,000 characters, but everything past the first 280 is collapsed behind a "Show more" control in the timeline. A thread keeps each idea visible in the feed instead of hiding it behind a click.

How do I publish the thread once it is split?

Copy the first post, publish it, then reply to your own post with the second and keep going. If you would rather not sit through that, Postify composes and schedules the whole chain in one step and publishes the replies for you.
