Facebook Post Mockup

Facebook folds a post behind "See more" after about 477 characters on desktop and earlier on mobile. Build the mockup here and see the cut before you publish it.

Last updated: 2026-08-03

Facebook has the most generous field on this list and the least useful ceiling: 63,206 characters is a field size, not advice. What matters is that desktop folds a post behind "See more" after about 477 characters, and mobile folds earlier depending on screen width, so the practical limit is a few hundred characters rather than sixty thousand.

The engagement data pushes in the same direction and much harder. Short posts of roughly 40 to 80 characters consistently earn more engagement than long ones, which means the fold is rarely the thing that stops you: most Facebook posts should end long before anyone would need to tap "See more" at all.

This mockup shows your post in the 1.91:1 shape the feed card is built around, with a page style name line and the fold drawn in place. Paste the copy, add an image if you have one, and see the whole thing laid out. Nothing you type or upload leaves your browser.

Your image never leaves your browser. It is shown from a local object URL and nothing is uploaded to us. HEIC photos straight from an iPhone only decode in Safari, so export a JPEG copy first if yours will not appear.

1.91:1

We rebuilt our whole publishing routine this quarter and the biggest win was boring: one shared calendar the whole team can actually see. No more guessing what went out, no more double posts, and no more Friday scramble. Full breakdown below 🚀 #SocialMediaTips

This is an approximation, not a screenshot. Desktop folds a post behind "See more" after about 477 characters. Mobile folds earlier depending on screen width. Write as if the fold sits earlier than the number and you will never be surprised by it.

Need the exact count rather than the picture? The Facebook character counter checks hashtags, mentions and the ceiling as you type.

Where each network folds a caption

The character limit is the ceiling. The fold is the number that decides how much of your caption a scrolling reader ever sees, and it is far smaller on every network that has one.

NetworkFolds atWhat happens at the cut
Instagram~125 charsBehind "... more"The feed collapses a caption after roughly 125 characters behind a "... more" link, so the opening line carries the hook.
FacebookThis page~477 charsBehind "See more"Desktop folds a post behind "See more" after about 477 characters. Mobile folds earlier depending on screen width.
ThreadsNo fold500 character capEach post in a chain gets its own 500 characters, so longer thoughts are split across replies rather than stretched.
LinkedIn~210 charsBehind "...see more"Desktop cuts the post at about 210 characters behind "...see more". Mobile folds closer to 140, so write for the tighter number.
X (Twitter)No fold280 character capA standard post never folds. Premium posts longer than 280 characters collapse behind a "Show more" toggle in the timeline.
TikTok~100 charsBehind "more"Only about the first line shows over the video, roughly 100 characters, before the "more" toggle. The exact cut depends on screen width.
YouTube~157 charsBehind "...more"The watch page shows roughly the first 157 characters of the description before "Show more", and that opening usually seeds the search snippet.
Pinterest~50 charsBehind "more"Only the first 50 to 60 characters of the description appear under a Pin in the feed. The rest opens on the Pin page.

Fold points verified 2026-07-31. Every one of them moves with screen width, text size and language, so treat them as close rather than exact.

Writing above the fold

On Facebook you are writing two things at once: a caption of up to 63,206 characters, and an opening of roughly 477 that has to work entirely on its own. Everything past that opening sits behind "See more", and the tap rate on that control is nothing like the read rate on the line above it.

Put the claim in the first sentence

Not the setup, not the context, not the greeting. The sentence that would make someone stop has to be the one that survives the cut, because everything after it is behind a tap that most readers never make.

Never break a thought across the fold

A caption that stops mid-clause reads like a bug rather than like a teaser. Either finish the idea before the cut or place a deliberate cliffhanger there, but do not let the character count choose the break for you.

Push hashtags and credits to the end

A block of tags at the top spends the most valuable space on the page on text nobody reads as a sentence. Tags work the same anywhere in the caption, so they belong after the words that have to be seen.

The one thing no preview can do is tell you exactly where the cut lands on a given phone. The fold moves with screen width, with the text size a reader has chosen, and with the language: German runs longer than English for the same sentence and folds sooner. Treat every number on this page as a ceiling to write under rather than as a mark to write up to, and the caption reads the way you meant it on every device.

Facebook preview tips

  • Aim for 40 to 80 characters when engagement is the goal. Short Facebook posts consistently outperform long ones, and at that length the fold is irrelevant.
  • If the post has to be long, make the first 477 characters a complete unit. Somebody who never taps "See more" should still have read something whole.
  • Assume mobile folds sooner. The 477 figure is a desktop number and phones cut earlier depending on width, so treat 300 characters as the safer working ceiling.
  • Use 0 to 2 hashtags. Facebook is the one network here where a tag block adds nothing and looks imported from Instagram.
  • Export images at 1200 x 630 and keep them under 4 MB. That 4 MB cap is the lowest of any network here and the most common Facebook upload rejection.
  • Put links in the post body, not only in an image. A link preview renders at 1.91:1, so the same photo can appear in two different crops depending on how you post it.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a real Facebook screenshot?

No. It is a neutral HTML approximation built from published layout numbers: a 1.91:1 media box matching the 1200 x 630 feed image, a page style name line, and the caption folded where Facebook folds it. There is no Facebook branding or interface in the card.

Will the fold land in the same place on my phone?

Not exactly. Desktop folds a post behind "See more" after about 477 characters, and mobile folds earlier depending on screen width. Treat 477 as the generous end of the range and write the first 300 characters as if they were the whole post.

Where does the image I add go?

Nowhere. It becomes a local object URL and is drawn into the card inside your browser. It is never uploaded to us and never reaches Facebook until you publish it yourself, and the URL is released when you replace the image or close the tab.

Can I download the mockup as an image?

Not yet. The caption copies with one button, but there is no export to a picture. A screenshot covers it: Cmd, Shift and 4 on macOS, or the Windows key with Shift and S on Windows. Choose folded or expanded before you capture.

How long should a Facebook post be?

Shorter than the fold, and usually far shorter. The field holds 63,206 characters and the desktop fold sits at about 477, but posts of roughly 40 to 80 characters consistently earn more engagement than anything longer. The ceiling is a technical fact, not a target.

Does a link preview change where the post folds?

No, the text folds at the same point. What the link preview changes is the layout beneath it: the card renders at 1.91:1 regardless of the shape of the image on the destination page, so a portrait image on your site still appears as a landscape crop in the feed.
